Overview

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most widely recognized and respected tests for assessing the English language proficiency of non-native speakers, particularly those seeking to study abroad in English-speaking countries. Universities and academic institutions, especially in the United States, Canada, and several other nations, often require TOEFL scores as part of their admissions process. This test measures a student’s ability to comprehend and use English in academic environments, focusing on four essential skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The Reading section evaluates a student’s ability to understand and analyze academic texts, testing comprehension, vocabulary, and the ability to extract key information from passages. In the Listening section, test-takers listen to academic lectures, discussions, and conversations before answering questions that assess their understanding of the main ideas, details, and speaker intentions.

Academic Focus

This specific test measures academic language competency and, hence, is suitable for students intending to study in English speaking countries.

Internet-Based Test (iBT)

Official ETS Test

ETS creates and conducts the TOEFL, which keeps it fair. Essentially, TOEFL helps in determining whether an individual can adequately participate in studies being conducted in English. It has become popular among all universities and institutions worldwide, making it useful for intercontinental students and professionals.

What are the different formats of the TOEFL test?

TOEFL test has mostly taken through the internet-based test (iBT) format by the majority of examinees. However, there is an alternative form of testing called a paper-based test (PBT), which is much less common but available in locations that do not have the electronic version. Here's an overview of the two formats:

TOEFL-PBT-(Paper-Based-Test)
TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test)

Sections: Listening, Structure and Written Expression, Reading Comprehension, Writing

Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours

Content Delivery: The test is paper-based, and the writing section involves completing tasks on paper.

TOEFL-iBT-(Internet-Based-Test)
TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test)

Sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing

Duration: Approximately 3 hours

Content Delivery: The test is taken on a computer, and the speaking section is conducted via a microphone.

The paper should mention that there is no such thing as the TOEFL iBT. This is because it is the standard form of TOEFL and is well recognized at every university and institution across the world. TOEFL PBT is not as frequently used these days, but it might be limited in test availability and/or acceptance at certain institutions.
