Overview

The GMAT is considered an objective examination that measures the competence of applicants who aim for post-graduate management courses, especially in business schooling. Business schools all over the world accept the GMAT developed and administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

It measures the overall knowledge of an individual in several important fields deemed necessary for success within business and management education. Business schools make use of GMAT scores alongside other admission requirements to test the preparedness of potential entrants in their schools.  Although it is one element in the admission procedure, a good score on the GMAT may positively influence prospects for acceptance into a highly ranked MBA program.

It measures the overall knowledge of an individual in several important fields deemed necessary for success within business and management education. The test consists of four main sections:

test (4)
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

This is a component that tests how well arguments are analyzed and how they communicate with clarity while writing. Provided with an argument, test-takers should compose an essay assessing this statement.

settings
Integrated Reasoning (IR)

This part determines if one is able to judge data displayed in different forms, including charts, figures, and tables. It requires test-takers to analyze data and infer solutions to complicated tasks.

quantitative
Quantitative Reasoning

This part assesses algebra skills, computation abilities and other aspects related to this topic. It consists of questions involving reasoning about data adequacy and business related issues, testing a candidates’ quantitative reasoning skill and his/her ability to solve problems.

speaking (1)
Verbal Reasoning

Here is where an individual’s reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction are assessed. The test scores show how well a test-taker can comprehend, analyze, and edit sentences.

GMAT Test Format

The GMAT test has four sections that measure various skills needed for graduate management education.

Analytical Writing

Time: 30 minutes
Tasks: The test-takers are also expected to develop an opinion on it and write about the appropriateness or inadequacy of the proposed explanation/reasoning for the statement. AWA part tests writing that is clear and logical in its thinking.

Integrated Reasoning (IR)

Time : 30 minutes
Tasks: The second section reviews how one can analyze and synthesize data in different presentations like charts, tables, or written words. Test takers are made to solve more complex problems by combining different information sets.

Quantitative Reasoning

Time : 62 minutes
Number of Questions: Approximately 31 questions
Question Types: The mathematics and quantitative section of GMAT includes questions on data sufficiency and problem solving. The areas covered are algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and data analysis.

Verbal Reasoning

Time Alotted : 65 minutes
Number of Questions: Approximately 36 questions
Question Types: The Verbal Reasoning is divided into sub-sections such as reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. The test-takers should be able to understand and summarize a text while noting down mistakes in a sentence.
The GMAT is an adaptive test, whereby the difficulty level of questions changes depending on the score made by an examinee. Therefore, the computer chooses questions depending on the testee’s prior answers. Right choices bring further tough questions but wrong ones attract easier following queries.

The total GMAT score goes from 200-800 points, comprising the scores from Quantitative and Verbal categories. The grades in the AWA and IR sections are awarded independently and the AWA grade is measured at points out of 0-6 while IR has scores of one through eight.

Eligibility has much to do with the requirements that a particular business school or program requires from its incoming candidates.

Create a Study Plan

Prepare an extensive and practical scheme of preparation for the GMAT test, including its three sections. Designate a time for every kind of question and section, too. As always, consistency is key.

Use Official GMAT Materials

Use officially prepared materials for the GMAT provided by GMAC. They provide a useful set of questions via their Official Guide for GMAT Review and GMATPrep software.

Take Practice Tests

You must try to take as many practice tests as possible. Try attempting long questions within a specific time frame so as to recreate the testing experience. It also allows you to get used to running at different speeds for different sections.

Focus on Weak Areas

Check where you excelled and failed in a mock test. Spend more time on the weak points, especially in the quantitative and verbal sections.

Quantitative and Verbal Review

Revisit some simple math for the Quantitative section. When studying for the Verbal section, concentrate on reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. Learn the question types and work on them.

Integrated Reasoning Practice

Go through the various kinds of questions under the Integrated Reasoning sub-section. Such as graphics interpretation, two-part analysis, table analysis, and multi-source reasoning.

Time Management

Students must develop effective time management skills. Make sure you practice well and are able to complete the exam on time by smartly allotting fixed minutes to each section.

Vocabulary Building

Improve your vocabularies and, more so, the verbal reasoning sector. Study the meanings of new words and how they are applied.

AWA Essay Writing Practice

Prepare for the Analytical Writing Assessment by practicing essay writing. Make sure your points are strong, concise, and clearly linked to the prompt.
